 Sugarcane Breeding institute is identified as one of
the two world centres (the other being Canal Point, Florida, U.S.A.)
to serve as repository for sugarcane germplasm.
Independent and joint
expeditions (in collaboration with international agencies) for
collection of different species of Saccharum and related genera
constitute an ongoing exercise of the Institute. The list below

The Erianthus clones have been characterised on 33 vegetative and 28
floral dexriptors. 240 S.spontaneum clones have also been
characterised based on 40 descrptors. Major portion of
sugarcane germplasm is being maintained at the research centre of the
Institute of Kannur (Kerala State). S. spontaneum is essentially
maintained at Coimbatore.
