
Over the decades starting from 1930' the area under cultivation, total
cane production, the per hectare productivity, total sugar production
and molasses production have shown a steady increase. Sugar recovery,
after an initial spurt in 30's and 40' following the introduction of
varieties like Co 312 and Co 419, has more or less stabilised in the
later decades. This is in spite of development and release of high
sucrose varieties mainly due to expansion of sugarcane cultivation in
marginal and low fertile lands.
The most notable achievement is the tremendous increase in
productivity, from around 35 t/ha in 30's to around 70 t/ha during the
past decade. This has come about through development and release of
high yielding varieties suited to varying agroclimatic conditions of
the country
